Proposed New Bus Shelter for Winchelsea Beach
The Parish Council wish to install a new bus shelter in Winchelsea Beach. The Feasibility Study below was carried out by East Sussex Highways in July 2019. The project was previously put on hold due to Covid and increasing costs.
There has been some delay due to the East Sussex Highways’ contract handover. The Clerk has now received updated costings from East Sussex Highways for the existing location. These are broken down as follows:-
Design and Supervision | £9,600.00 |
Construction Costs | £13,200.00 |
TOTAL | £22,800.00 |
The Parish Council intend to apply for grant funding from East Sussex County Council and Rother District Council and will need to show public support for the project to do so.

Bus Shelter Options
Residents have two options of bus shelter as detailed below:-
Option 1 – Littlethorpe Cropston

The Cropston shelter is ideal where the pavement is very narrow, or where a larger bus shelter may restrict the visibility of traffic (e.g. near driveways or junctions). This shelter can be adapted in many ways; all glazing and boarding is interchangeable, dimensions can be altered to fit the location, and alternative roof styles and materials are available.
The roof can be shortened to as little as 1050mm; naturally the smaller the roof the less cover there is for bus passengers. The heavy duty brackets supporting the roof are cast iron.
This shelter can be installed in reverse with its back to the road, in so doing giving greater protection from the traffic and spray in wet weather. Seating; bench seating is an optional extra.
All Littlethorpe shelters are made from sustainably sourced FSC® certified hardwood, have an expected lifespan in excess of 50 years, and come with a five year guarantee against being kicked in or burnt down.
Cost of Shelter (6.5mm glazing as pictured above) | £6,495.00 |
Delivery | £882.00 |
TOTAL | £7,394.00* |
*Excl VAT |
Option 2 – Jewel Bus Shelter

The Jewel Bus Shelter has a modern shape with a stylish curved roof. Steel, modular construction makes it possible to adjust the shelter length and width to fit location or situation. The glass exterior is less intrusive on landscapes and is made of 6mm toughened safety glass.
Cost of Shelter as pictured above | £3,868.00 |
Delivery | £0.00 |
TOTAL | £3,868.00* |
The Parish Council are hosting a ‘drop in’ session at Winchelsea Beach Community Hall where residents can come and find out more and vote for their favoured bus shelter. The drop in session is at Winchelsea Beach Community Hall on Wednesday 11th October 5.00 pm to 8.00 pm. We look forward to seeing you.
